The Basics of Backgammon Strategies – Part One

[ English ]

The goal of a Backgammon match is to shift your chips around the game board and pull them off the game board quicker than your opponent who works just as hard to attempt the same buthowever they move in the opposing direction. Succeeding in a match in Backgammon requires both tactics and good luck. Just how far you can shift your chips is up to the numbers from rolling a pair of dice, and the way you move your chips are decided on by your overall playing techniques. Players use different techniques in the different stages of a match based on your positions and opponent’s.

The Running Game Plan

The goal of the Running Game plan is to bring all your chips into your inner board and bear them off as quick as you can. This tactic concentrates on the speed of advancing your pieces with little or no efforts to hit or stop your opponent’s pieces. The ideal scenario to employ this tactic is when you think you can shift your own checkers faster than your opposition does: when 1) you have less pieces on the board; 2) all your checkers have past your competitor’s chips; or 3) the opponent doesn’t use the hitting or blocking strategy.

The Blocking Game Tactic

The primary aim of the blocking tactic, by the name, is to block your opponent’s pieces, temporarily, not fretting about shifting your checkers quickly. Once you have established the barrier for the opponent’s movement with a few chips, you can move your other checkers quickly off the board. You will need to also have a good plan when to back off and move the pieces that you employed for the blockade. The game becomes interesting when your competitor uses the same blocking strategy.
