Backgammon – Three Basic Schemes
In very general terms, there are 3 chief game plans used. You want to be able to hop between game plans quickly as the course of the match unfolds.
The Blockade
This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might manage, to barricade in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate strategy at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.
The Blitz
This consists of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is now in big-time calamity seeing that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!
The Backgame
This plan is where you have 2 or higher anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It would be played when you are significantly behind as this strategy much improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchors are close to your competitor’s lower points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, taking into account that you don’t have any other additional pieces to shift! In this case, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
