Backgammon – 3 General Schemes

In very simple terms, there are three chief plans used. You want to be agile enough to switch tactics almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might achieve, to block in the competitor’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable course of action at the start of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your challenger is now in serious difficulty considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a position filled by at least 2 of your checkers.) It should be played when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The best places for anchors are towards your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your competitor is getting their pieces home, seeing that you don’t have any other extra checkers to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up until your competitor gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
