Backgammon – 3 Main Techniques
In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 basic game plans used. You want to be able to hop between techniques instantly as the action of the game unfolds.
The Blockade
This comprises of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you are able to manage, to block in your opponent’s checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable course of action at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.
The Blitz
This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opponent rolls an early 2 and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opponent is then in serious calamity considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!
The Backgame
This plan is where you have two or more checkers in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are significantly behind as this action much improves your circumstances. The best locations for anchors are towards your opponent’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: after all, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, because you do not have other extra checkers to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up until your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this case!
