Backgammon – 3 General Techniques

In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 general game plans used. You want to be able to switch game plans instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to barricade in the opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one checker from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is now in serious calamity taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more checkers in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be employed when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The best areas for anchor spots are close to your opponent’s lower points and either on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: after all, there is no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, because you don’t have any other additional pieces to shift! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it may be a good idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
