In astonishingly general terms, there are three general plans employed. You need to be able to switch strategies almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might achieve, to lock in the competitor’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is then in big-time dire straits considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It needs to be employed when you are extremely behind as this plan much improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchors are close to your opponent’s smaller points and either on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for an effective backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, considering that you do not have other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a good idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this case!
