In exceptionally simple terms, there are three main strategies employed. You must be able to hop between techniques almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you can manage, to block in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate strategy at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your opponent tosses an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time calamity taking into account that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or higher pieces in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least two of your checkers.) It should be played when you are decidedly behind as this action greatly improves your circumstances. The better locations for anchor spots are near your competitor’s smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is essential for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it’s better to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position up until your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
